Chongqing 'Edison Chen' embarrassed over nude pics scandal

A MAN in southwestern China's Chongqing Municipality said he felt embarrassed over Hong Kong actor and singer Edison Chen's nude pictures scandal as he has the same Chinese name as the troubled star, which has made him a target of teasing among friends.

Chen Guanxi, a mechanical worker in the city's Jiangbei District, complained that he felt "uneasy and awkward" when friends and colleagues joked with him about the racy pictures that show Edison Chen in sexual poses with a dozen female celebrities in bed, Chongqing Evening News reported today.

The scandal has created a media frenzy and heated discussions on BBS communities both in Hong Kong and on the mainland since the scandal broke in mid January.

Some Internet users shared the raunchy pictures by e-mail or by posting them on other Websites. So far, more than 800 of those pictures have been circulated on the Internet.

"I felt ok at first about these jokes," the Chongqing native said. "But later, the scandal really embarrassed me as more and more people came up to ask me 'How many raunchy pictures I have,' or offered me the latest reports about the scandal," he added.

"Every time people gossiped about the scandal, they always smile at me as if I was the man in those pictures and I feel sick," he said.

"I've no idea why I was named Chen Guanxi," he said.

However, the Chongqing Chen Guanxi said he didn't plan to change his Chinese name as "true friends won't judge him simply based on his name."

Edison Chen, a Canada-born Chinese, told more than 300 reporters at a news conference last Thursday that he decided to quit the Hong Kong entertainment industry after finishing current projects. He also said he was "sorry to the women and their families" involved in the scandal and hoped he could receive "the public's forgiveness" and "a new chance."

The 27-year-old star left Hong Kong yesterday after cooperating with the police's investigation into the nude picture scandal.
